Freshly designed with swooping curves, the black plastic frame on the New Kenya coffee press adds to the anticipation of the morning coffee. And good coffee indeed this press makes. Most aficionados agree that the French press, or plunger, style of coffee maker produces the smoothest cup of joe. Bodum makes the carafe itself of borosilicate glass, the lightweight, heat-resistant kind found in science labs, and the plunger and three-piece filter system of stainless steel. The plastic frame tightly wraps the glass beaker and protects your table from its heat. The lid is also plastic.
To make coffee in the New Kenya, put in the glass carafe one scoop of coarse-ground coffee beans per every four ounces of brewed coffee you intend to make. Add nearly-boiling water, stir with a silicone spatula, and place the filter-plunger-lid unit in the top. After four minutes of brewing, slowly press down on the plunger. Pour, and enjoy. Use the same spatula to scrape the grounds out afterward, and rinse out the carafe and assembly. All the parts are dishwasher-safe as well. This size makes 17 ounces of coffee, which equals approximately two mugs or four after-dinner cups. --Ann Bieri

"For about a year at my new job I have faced a daily dilemma: drink the nasty "cafe loma" (garbage coffee) for free, or pay $1.60 to refill my travel mug at the company coffee bar (they brew Starbucks and Seattle's Best). I was not familiar with the French press until seeing it at a restaurant, after which I did a little research and ended up with this model. I grind my beans every week (ok, ok, I know... I should grind every day... I'm not that motivated in the morning) and there is no question: even the Starbucks beans that someone gave me as a "gift" tasted better in the press than from the coffee bar. I like a variety of coffees so I am always trying something new; the Kenya has been a blessing for this task. Cleaning it in a work sink is kind of a pain ("NO GRINDS DOWN THE DRAIN!!" signs everywhere) but that is not the fault of the device. The only two "heads ups" I'll give are that 1) the filter screen has a sharp "thread" poking out that has stuck me a couple of times (I am sure that this is a small defect, but something to be aware of) and 2) when they say "4 cups" that is actually "American" for "2 mugs". Other reviewers have pointed this out, but if you want to fill your oversized travel mug up in the morning, you might want to go with a larger unit. It's actually good for me because I don't need to be drinking that much coffee, anyway. I would suggest that, if you are on the fence, go for the larger one; you can always underfill it. Oh, and the other reviewers are right: empty the beaker within 15 minutes of brewing the coffee. If you leave it in any longer it starts to get bitter. I would also strongly recommend a good burr grinder; I use the Capresso basic model and it does a decent job. Once you have your Bodum and your burr grinder, you'll be on your way to being a true coffee snob (I am now shopping for home bean roasters, haha)." More reviews....

Bodum 34-Ounce Coffee Press Glass Replacement Beaker, Reviews

I always keep a spare Bodum carafe in the cupboard so I don't have to worry about rushing to find a replacement when the one I'm using gets broken. I've been using this French press for many years and am just now buying my 3rd carafe for the same reason: my husband is not so gentle with dishes when washing them and has broken so many things I've lost count.
Anyway, may I suggest to all who have had frustration over the size of the carafe: keep a spare, in its box, in your cupboard. When you have to replace a broken one, use the size/capacity/model number info from the box to reorder and you'll always have the correct replacement. And you won't go a day without your favorite French pressed coffee!
I don't think the glass is particularly fragile, but it is thin and warrants careful handling just like a wineglass does.
Bodum 34-Ounce Coffee Press Glass Replacement Beaker
Features :
- A broken beaker shouldn't put an end to getting great coffee-press coffee, nor should you have to purchase another whole set
- This glass replacement beaker serves multiple purposes; use it as a replacement or as an extra
- Meant to fit with all 34-ounce coffee-press sets, this style works with all Bodum 8-cup coffee presses
- Constructed of glass with an easy-pour spout
- Safe to clean in the dishwasher
Review :
"I really like my Bodum coffee presses - I have two sizes, and was delighted to see I could replace the beaker separately. But watch out if you order a replacement beaker. My small one holds 3 of what I think are ordinary cups, so I ordered the 3 cup replacement beaker by mistake. Looks like my small one is actually an 8 cup unit, and my big one (which hold 5 of my cups) is a 12 cup unit. There is no info on the Bodum itself of how big it is, so if you don't remember, it takes some guesswork to figure out whether you have a "3", "8", or "12" cup Bodum.
Study the measurements carefully and get the closest match. The oz's held are the easiest way to tell, but of course if the beaker is broken you have a problem." More reviews....

Krups Fast Touch Coffee Grinders, Reviews

I've had this grinder for 10 years and use it constantly. I buy all of my beans whole, so this little grinder has been well used. I purchased this grinder from a Spiegel outlet store in Chicago. At the time I was employed by them, so my incentive to buy this grinder along with a Krups coffee maker was my employee discount, without really doing any research or knowing anything about different brands of coffee makers/grinders. Both Krups products are still plugging away and making great coffee. The grinder has some minor limitations as stated in some of these reviews - such as longer grinding time - and the beans can also grind inconsistently (I've heard that is a consequence of the oval shape but I'm not sure if that is true). If you make sure your beans are at room temperature before grinding (for those of you who store beans in the 'fridge/freezer) that will help to lessen the wear on the blades. But it is a great value for the price, and highly recommended.
Krups Fast Touch Coffee Grinders

Review :
"I mill my Krups 203 Brown accession (a long, long time ago). It still works well when I bought it. Although not a bazillion bells and whistles or two degrees of grinding more expensive models, a little thought for me I want to crunch all that I have beans with a fine powder. Do not overfill the grinder that does put the beans in the cap then the mill upside down to connect to any of the beans. It cleans easily, although I recommend pulling the grinder before drying with a paper towel. Also, wash the top with water just like a pot of coffee to avoid adding unwanted taste soap. The few negative reviews, which puzzles me is easy to complain, as this machine. (A negative review also said that "the coffee is very, very hot and weak." Who, of course, the mill has nothing to do with the actual filtration process.)" More reviews...

Cuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill (CCM-16PC1) Reviews

A stylish grinder for the serious coffee buff, this Cuisinart Supreme Grind automatic burr mill provides plenty of options and good results in an attractive and tidy structure. This makes it a great appliance for houses where coffee is a steady dietary staple and preferences vary from espresso to French drip. Outfitted with a heavy-duty motor, the machine has 18 grind settings ranging from fine to extra-coarse, which are controlled by a clearly marked, pleasantly clicking dial. Rotate the hopper to personal preference, and the machine does the rest, using burr plates for a highly uniform grind that protects bean oils and releases more flavor. Automatic operation in this grinder covers quantity as well--simply set the amount slide control anywhere from 4 to 18 cups. The grinder shuts off when the desired level is reached. Transfer of ready grounds to a coffee pot or espresso group is quick and tidy, because the grind chamber slides out with its clever lid in place.
Smart and elegant, the grinder has brushed stainless steel housing and black accents in durable plastic. The hopper, hopper lid, grinding burr, and grind chamber all remove easily for cleanup, and a safety feature keeps the grinder from operating without the hopper and chamber in place. Standing 6-3/4 by 9-3/4 by 5 inches, the unit has built-in power cord storage at its base. Cuisinart includes a coffee scoop/cleaning brush in one and covers the machine with an 18-month warranty. --Emily Bedard

"I had always heard this kind of grinder was better, and it really is. Cuisinart has outdone themselves again for functionality and a great looking addition to your Cuisinart coffeemakers. I love the handy storage also if you want to grind more than one pot at a time. It will grind from almost powderlike to a coarse blend, and all easily adjusted settings in between. It even grinds to whatever cup setting you plan on brewing! I'm very happy with this grinder, it looks great sitting right next to my Cuisinart coffeemaker.
